Adventures in Motherwell

Question: How many Glasgow taxi drivers does it take to find a hotel in Motherwell?

Answer: Three, plus a someone looking up directions online and drunk old man.

Me, Adrian and a group of friends went to a wedding in Motherwell yesterday. We decided to take a few taxis rather than the train, figuring that the cost would be about the same if we split the taxi fares between all of us.

Adrian called up the taxi company and told them our destination in advance, so we assumed the drivers would know where to go. To our surprise, not one of the three taxi drivers could find the hotel. One driver initially refused to leave unless someone could give him the postcode to plug into his sat nav. Another driver didn’t even have sat nav. We asked ours if he’d ever been to Motherwell.

“Aye,” he said. “About 10 years ago.”

We eventually made it to the ceremony thanks to texted directions from a friend with access to the internet and a helpful drunk guy sitting outside of the Motherwell Social Club. But no thanks to you, Network Cabs. Three lost taxi drivers? You fail.

And now for a completely unrelated Motherwell story:

Adrian and I were in Preswick Airport waiting to board a flight to Milan Bergamo. A group of drunk guys in funny hats and kilts, probably on their way to a stag weekend, walked by our queue on their way to the toilet.

“Wooo! Motherwell!” one guy shouted (Motherwell is a popular football team).

“Very well,” replied a polite Italian man.

To be fair, it wasn't entirely the cab drivers' fault - apparently their head office just tells them where they have to pick up, not where they have to go. You'd think destination information might be useful.

Hi from a fellow Long Islander! Well, a former Long Islander...I've been living in Germany for the past 9 yrs. My family and I are considering a move to Glasgow. From your blog it seems that you're a wee bit younger and probably don't have kids yet...but I'm wondering if you've heard anything about the schools there? Or maybe know of another expat blog with info about it? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Yeah, well ... it's also quite bad when they can't use their SatNav well enough to find the place. I mean, c'mon, we managed to use one in Italy, with it stuck speaking some Scandinavian language for the first day, and got where we needed to go!

Bah. They like short trips, anyway - they make way more money on them than they do on longer ones. That's probably why they were rude about it.

Hi Familie Grevemberg!

I'm afraid I don't know much about the schools here, but here's a good link that lists the schools and shows you for some of them: http://www.schoolsnet.com/uk-schools/best-school/top-glasgow-schools/16180339/0/-1/1/71.html

And yeah, the sat navs weren't particularly useful on this trip. I'm just glad we made it to the wedding, albeit after the ceremony had already started.
